2015 — The Garissa University Attack
At dawn on April 2, 2015, four al-Shabaab gunmen stormed Garissa University College in northeastern Kenya, seizing more than 700 students and executing those who professed Christianity. When the siege ended, 148 people were dead and at least 79 wounded. It was Kenya's deadliest attack since the 1998 embassy bombing, a day that cut deeply into a campus built for learning.
Nine months later the campus reopened, rebuilt and guarded. Yet the reopening could not restore what was lost. The silence in its empty dormitories told the true cost — of young lives taken in a place where students had gathered to study, to live, and to begin their futures.
