1979 — The Lancaster House Agreement

On December 21, 1979, Britain and the rival Rhodesian delegations signed the Lancaster House Agreement in London, ending fourteen years of white-minority rebellion and the Rhodesian Bush War. The signatures closed a long conflict and set written terms for what would come next in place of the rebellion.

The deal restored British authority, imposed a ceasefire, and opened the way for free elections under universal franchise. In April 1980, Robert Mugabe swept the polls, and Rhodesia became the independent Republic of Zimbabwe. Lancaster House matters because it turned a battlefield stalemate into a ballot: the franchise, extended to everyone, decided the country's future, and a new nation emerged from the count.
