2000 — The Titanic Express Massacre

On December 28, 2000, the Titanic Express bus traveling from Kigali to Bujumbura was ambushed at Mageyo in Burundi. The attackers robbed the passengers, separated them by ethnicity, and shot the Tutsi travelers — along with British volunteer Charlotte Wilson — killing 21 civilians on an ordinary journey between two capitals.

The attack was blamed on the Palipehutu-FNL, which denied responsibility, and to this day no one has been brought to justice. That unanswered ending is central to the story: twenty-one people killed, responsibility denied, and no court ever settling the account. The bus's terrible name outlived the journey — a memorial in itself to passengers who never arrived.
