1991 — South Africa's Football Unites

On December 8, 1991, four historically separate, racially divided soccer bodies united in Durban to found one non-racial South African Football Association. For decades the game had mirrored apartheid itself, with separate associations for white, African, Indian, and Coloured players, keeping South Africans apart even on the football field.

FIFA had first suspended the country in 1961 and later expelled it altogether. Within months of unity, SAFA was readmitted to FIFA to a standing ovation, and South Africa fielded its first fully representative national team, beating Cameroon 1–0 at King's Park. Before the nation itself was made whole, its footballers had shown what a single, shared team could look like.
