1985 — Live Aid

On July 13, 1985, the biggest concert the world had ever seen was really a call to save Africa. Bob Geldof's Live Aid raised famine relief for Ethiopia, with simultaneous concerts in London's Wembley Stadium and Philadelphia's JFK Stadium, watched by an estimated 1.9 billion people in 100 countries around the world.

Queen, U2, Madonna, and dozens more played while donations poured in. The day also echoed with the music of Bob Marley, gone four years by then, whose anthem for Africa ran through the sets. By the end, Live Aid had raised over £150 million for famine relief in Ethiopia.
