1985 — The Kampala Coup
On July 27, 1985, Uganda's army turned on its own president. The Uganda National Liberation Army overthrew President Milton Obote, who had returned to power in a disputed 1980 election and was presiding over a brutal civil war. Obote fled into exile once more as Kampala changed hands again.
The coup leaders, generals Tito Okello and Bazilio Olara-Okello, took the capital by force, ending Obote's second rule. Their military council held power for barely six months, before a young guerrilla leader named Yoweri Museveni marched into the capital and seized power himself. Museveni, the young guerrilla leader, still rules Uganda today, decades later.
