1960 — Congo's Independence

On June 30, 1960, the Democratic Republic of Congo became independent from Belgium. At the ceremony in Leopoldville, the new nation marked the end of Belgian rule in a formal setting shared with the very power that had governed it, a handover meant to close the colonial chapter in orderly fashion.

New Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba delivered a thunderclap of a speech, denouncing colonialism to the stunned faces of the Belgian king and his ministers. Independence came wrapped in a warning: the struggle was not over. Lumumba refused to let the ceremony pretend otherwise, and his words turned a handover into a reckoning heard around the world.
