1896 — The Battle of Adwa

On March 1, 1896, Emperor Menelik II's Ethiopian army crushed Italy's invading force near the town of Adwa, ending the First Italo-Ethiopian War. It was a complete and stunning victory, won on Ethiopian ground against a modern European expedition that had come expecting to conquer.

The Treaty of Addis Ababa that followed forced Italy to recognize Ethiopia's full independence. An African army had defeated a European power in open battle, and the news travelled far beyond Ethiopia's borders. Adwa became a founding symbol of Pan-Africanism, a proof carried in memory for generations that African freedom could be defended, and won, by African hands.
