1968 — The Black Power Salute
▶ Watch the 60-second film On October 16, 1968, at the Olympic stadium in Mexico City, two Black American athletes, Tommie Smith and John Carlos, climbed the medal podium. As the anthem played, they raised black-gloved fists to the sky, heads bowed, in a silent protest against racism. The image shocked the world. They were expelled from the Games and stripped of their moment of glory, punished at the very height of their triumph.
That single gesture became the most powerful symbol of Black dignity in the 20th century. It echoed from the diaspora back to the motherland, where a continent was still fighting to be free, and it showed how a silent act, held for a moment, could speak across oceans.
