1966 — Lesotho Gains Independence

▶ Watch the 60-second film

On October 4, 1966, the mountain kingdom of Lesotho was born. Founded by King Moshoeshoe I, who had sought British protection to escape Boer expansion, this tiny nation refused to be swallowed by apartheid South Africa. Instead it became something extraordinary: a sovereign country entirely inside another, ringed by mountains, and crowned with a constitutional monarchy and a brand-new parliament.

Lesotho chose freedom on its own terms, and has kept it ever since. Its story begins in protection sought under pressure, yet the kingdom turned that shelter into sovereignty. A kingdom in the sky, small in size and surrounded on every side, it stood at independence as its own state, under its own crown and parliament.
